You clean the coin very VERY close to where you actually end up using it.
If you can't find it and it's driving you crazy, here's a walkthrough:
My problem was... I never saw the coin at the Lover's Room! It all goes downhill from there.
I'm also stuck with Hoagie's training device and can't find the Ethanol or Magnesium. Any pointers?
